Singapore and Australia 2012

We decided to break our Journey to Oz with a couple of days in Singapore on the way – always a good idea to help with the jet lag!  So we visited the Gardens by the Bay on one day and the Singapore Orchid Gardens the next – beautiful.

Gardens by the bay

Marina bay hotel...looks like a boat on the top but it's shops and restaurants!

Then on to Sydney overnight and to Melbourne the following morning to pick up Herb and Eileen’s motorhome which we were borrowing for 5 weeks (after they had used ours during the summer).  We stayed with them for one night, catching up on our travels and theirs and then set off after breakfast the next morning.  We kept the first day short and travelled just 150k to Lake Eiland National Park.  As with all national parks you are supposed to book online OR by phone…..brilliant idea when you have neither internet or phone access in remote areas!  I did try wandering in different directions to get a phone signal and managed one blob but still couldn’t get connected. Free night then!

It was a great location, full of wildlife….we were mobbed by parrots and visited by a kookaburra and a few curious kangaroos.

The next part of our route took us to Bright at the start of the Alpine Highway.  We were able to park overnight at a scenic lookout….that would NEVER happen in the UK!

Then a day travelling through the ski resorts, which were really beautiful – the snow only went about a month ago so it was still quite cold until we reached the coast @ Lakes Entrance – a 500km square network of lakes and inland waterways.  It was still cold though – we nearly bought an extra fleece each when we stopped at a café for hot chocolate!  The sun came out later though and extra clothing purchases were not required!

Then on to Eden, which is on the coast and the start of our journey along the coast towards Sydney.  This is the centre for whale watching until the end of November so we’re hoping to do that tomorrow.
